Just because a coin is on the top 100 list on CoinMarketCap doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily a good coin. Remember, the rankings fluctuate all the time, and sometimes there are better opportunities in lesser known projects and teams. However, if you bank entirely on the ranked position of a coin, you may miss the bigger windfalls from investing into lesser known projects that become more prominent. Furthermore, as you observe trends in crypto, there are enough cases where top 100 coins fall down the list and end up becoming irrelevant, that it’s almost impossible to depend on this as a reliable metric for doing due diligence on the project itself. Remember that the rankings aren’t static and there are tons of projects and forks of pre-existing projects that could lead to several coins taking the top spots on the market cap leaderboard. It happens all the time, and yet people depend on the subjective market cap rating to determine the quality of the project, and how likely the coin could succeed over the long haul. Instead, it’s better to focus on the merits of the coin itself, and to determine whether there will be a powerful use case for the crypto asset beyond value retention. Value is transitory, and its subjected to the whims of the market. When you combine the fact that many of these coins haven’t established a long history of price performance, the dependence on current market cap, and ranking is hardly a reliable forward indicator. You will see many cases on social media, where projects measure their success via the market cap of their coin relative to peers. Instead, it should be based on the usage of the app, and how it may contribute to the entirety of the crypto ecosystem. Defining the usefulness of a crypto asset is subjective, and some substitute market cap, or ranking to make a snap judgment. It’s like depending on wisdom of crowds, but as we’ve seen time and time again, the wisdom of crowds easily gets upended, and is faddish at best, especially in the world of cryptocurrency.
