Why indeed is Bitcoin the biggest cryptocurrency in the space? Its mostly related to the structure of the entire crypto economy, and crypto exchanges. Bitcoin is usually the gateway to buying other crypto assets, because most exchanges offer the BTC pair with any corresponding token or currency. Hence, whenever Bitcoin drops in value, the causal corollary of weakness across the alt-coin markets comes into effect, because eventually, the market will need a means of exiting the system with cash fiat, which is predominantly traded via BTC to fiat swaps at the largest exchanges that also offer a conventional brokerage-escrow as well. Hence, the market is so reliant upon the moves in Bitcoin to determine whether to keep accumulating the alternatives. If Bitcoin isn’t having a great year, it’s unlikely that the rest of the coins across the exchanges will do much better. In fact, what merits an investment into a project ties into the perceived losses one has experienced in the base crypto currency they’re investing from. So, if Bitcoin drops in value say 50%, the purchasing power of BTC to various coin/token swaps also drops, which reduces the purchasing power of the entire ecosystem, which causes the price of various alts to tank in corresponding fashion. It goes beyond the brand, or the fact that Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency. Yes, those two are definitive facts, but most importantly is the structure of the exchange ecosystem, whereby most new issuances of tokens, and alt currencies trade directly with Bitcoin. Hence, Bitcoin is the gateway into the remaining cryptocurrency ecosystem, and when the price of Bitcoin falters, the demand for alts also falters, because the cost of buying the alt has gone up, as BTC prices drop. Does this pattern change anytime soon? Most likely not, because it would imply that there’s enough active trading pairs that can be accessed directly via an exchange to avoid the usual BTC to XYZ currency pairs. When this pattern shifts, we can then observe a pattern of diminished BTC dominance, but then again, BTC dominance has held up this past rotation cycle, and its primarily because the underlying mechanisms of the market hasn’t changed. Optimism towards emerging crypto assets and the corresponding tech has risen these past couple years, but the underlying mechanism for funding token sales, or the nature in which cash is moved into the ecosystem has not. Hence, BTC’s relative dominance to other crypto assets and tokens will persist.
